Ride Description:
Now in its third-and-a-half iteration, this scenic ride goes in and around Shirley, MA, once voted America’s Most Historic Small Town by ePodunk.com (really!), and is timed to catch some fall foliage. Both distances include a few roads rarely visited by CRW, with nice sections in Groton, Townsend, Lunenburg, Shirley, and a return through Devens. The long ride now adds a new loop further north and west on more back roads in Lunenburg and Townsend. (This year's long ride no longer goes south into Lancaster, Bolton, and Harvard.) Both routes only pass through one traffic light. Short ride has 1,500 ft. of climbing. Long ride has 2,300 feet of climbing.
Limited snacks and drinks available at convenience store in Lunenburg, but opportunities otherwise slim, so BYO.
Ride Start Location:
Nashua River Rail Trail, Ayer Commuter Parking Garage, 3 Groton St., Ayer. Please park and meet at the far end of the garage. Because the start location is a parking garage with limited height, if you have bikes on a roof rack, park in the small commuter lot (14 Park St., Ayer) on the left side of the road before you get to the Dunkin Donuts, then ride the last 1/10th mile to the parking garage on Groton St. No restrooms at the start, but several gas stations and the Dunkin Donuts are nearby.
