Ride Description:
On Saturday, July 5th let's ride from the Fresh Pond Mall in Cambridge to Marblehead via the Somerville and Eastern Strand bike paths. The Marblehead Arts Festival is happening over the 4th of July weekend with concerts, craft fairs, and stuff to see at the historic sites. There is lots of history to see as the route wends thru Marblehead's old town. Scenic outlooks over the harbor and ocean can be had at Crocker Park and Ft Sewall. If you have a gravel bike, bring it since the Old Town section of Marblehead is surprisingly hilly and accounts for most of the elevation gain on the route.
Marblehead claims to be the birthplace of the American Navy and it was Marblehead's regiment that rowed Washington across the Delaware. But, back in the day (1910), a local, Starling Burgess, licensed the Wright Brothers' patents and built, at the time, the largest airplane factory in America, employing 800 workers. He also invented the seaplane and aircraft carrier prototypes which he tested in Marblehead harbor. That would make Marblehead the birthplace of naval aviation. Surprisingly, there is no mention of this anywhere in town. But, we'll ride by the old factory site at mile 28.1, just after Ft Sewall.
Lunch stops: We will have spread out by the time we get to M'hd so there's no official stop. Nevertheless, pretty good places are Shubie's, Terrie's Ice cream, Java Sun, and +Cafe, all at around mile 29-30 on Atlantic Ave (the main st) with snack oriented menues. Cheap (relatively) actual food can be had at the Driftwood (just before the big crane) and the Barnicle (near Ft Sewall).
Return to Boston via the Lynn ferry and pick up the bike path from the waterfront.
Lynn Ferry: The ferry fare is $7.00 payable in cash or via the MBTA mTicket app which can be downloaded to your phone. https://www.appcracy.com/app/mbta-mticket.html?msclkid=14ebbc1c8a50194a8c94d47ab8ee440c&cc=169921489
Ferries will leave at 3:00, 5:00, and 6:45. It's typically a 40-45 minute ride. There is lots of room. And, there is booze on board. That stout went down really well after a hot scouting ride.
