Join the Charles River Museum for an inspiring look at the life and times of Major Taylor, one of the most consequential athletes in America.

    Date and time: Wednesday, October 16 · 7 - 8pm EDT

Location: Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation
154 Moody Street Waltham, MA 02453

    Presented by: Todd Balf

Join the Charles River Museum for an inspiring look at the life and times of Major Taylor, one of the most consequential athletes in American sports history.

Taylor was racing on the national and international stage at a time when the US was deeply segregated. He combatted both racial prejudice and systemic barriers to triumph as the ‘world’s fastest man.’ The legendary African American cyclist and the Charles Metz Company of Waltham were deeply intertwined through the golden age of bicycle racing and innovation. Taylor raced on Metz's "Orient" bicycles, and his sprinting ability and speed on the lightweight Orient bikes brought him national fame during the rise of cycling as a competitive sport in America.

However, as the 20th century progressed, the bicycle industry began to decline, largely due to the rise of automobiles. Charles Metz himself shifted his focus from bicycles to cars, founding the Metz Company in 1909, marking the end of an era for Waltham's bicycle production. Still, Taylor’s triumphs in the face of racial adversity remain a lasting legacy of both his own perseverance, and the innovations of the Waltham-based Metz Company.

Todd Balf writes for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and others, and is the author of several books including this summer’s “Three Kings” and “Major: A Black Athlete, a White Era, and the Fight to be the World’s Fastest Human Being.” He is an enthusiastic advocate for cycling and accessibility.

Major: A Black Athlete, a White Era, and the Fight to Be the World's Fastest Human Being by Todd Balf tells the riveting and inspiring story of Major Taylor, an African American cyclist who defied the odds in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Amidst the deeply segregated society of his time, Taylor rose to become the world’s fastest cyclist and a global sports icon. Balf’s meticulously researched book not only captures Taylor’s athletic prowess but also highlights his struggles against racial prejudice and personal battles. This powerful narrative sheds light on a groundbreaking figure whose legacy transcends sports, symbolizing resilience and the fight for equality in a racially divided world.

The Ride for Food partners with over 20 hunger relief organizations, community farms, and food rescue organizations to provide a platform for them to raise funds to support their fight for food security.  The event this year is planned for October 6th and hosts a 25, 50, and 62.2 mile bike through various towns and a cross country 5K walk around the campus.  The day begins with a DJ and breakfast and ends with a live band and a lunch.  We anticipate around 300 to 350 riders in attendance that day.

We need the support of experienced riders to volunteer to be our Ride Marshals on event day.  Our routes will be enhanced knowing we have riders to guide, direct and supervise our less experienced riders on the routes.  You will also have emergency contact information of our mechanics trucks, motorcycle marshals and contacts on campus in case of a break downs or other minor issues that may arise.  We have multiple locations with police detail at our “tricky” intersections.  Route maps will be provided for use in Garmen, Strava or as turn by turn directions in Ride with GPS.

Our routes can be found here:

    Calling all CRW Ride Leaders!

Our biggest and bestest century of 2024 is coming up October 13, the Cranberry Harvest Century!

Charles River Wheelers - CRW Cranberry Harvest Century 2024

We are looking for ride leaders for a variety of pace groups, for each distance. Riders love being in a paced group. It's more social, you go faster, and everyone has more fun. Help make this century our best yet! Pick a route, a pace, and a start time, and be part of the action!

Last year we had EIGHT ride leaders leading paced groups over four routes. Can we beat that this year???

Bonus: If you haven't led a ride yet this year, opting to lead a paced group will earn you the code to register for FREE!

Ready to help out? Contact a member of our Century team:

The 37th annual Bike-A-Thon fundraiser ride, happening this year on Sunday, September 8th! The Bike-A-Thon is Bikes Not Bombs largest fundraiser. The event brings together over 400 riders, and raises over $200,000 every year. Riders choose from one of five routes to ride, leave in the morning, and return in the afternoon for an afternoon of food, festivities, and a celebration of the wider bike community in Boston! The event supports BNB’s mission and work.

This event would not be possible without the work of an incredible group of volunteers. Our volunteer needs range from bike mechanics to greeting and directing riders to the event, handing out t-shirts, helping set-up and take-down the stage, chairs, and tables, or even staffing a rest stop outside of Boston along the ride route!

We’re looking for individuals or groups who would be interested in volunteering. Here is the website to sign up and learn more about the details of each shift and role.
