Ride Start:

Roam through the middle of D2R2 country riding amazing, scenic & traffic-free routes. Prepare for plenty of climbing in some cases well above the golden ratio of 100ft/mi.

All rides lead from the center of Conway, MA. Plenty of parking at the ballfield above the town hall.

The ride coincides with a full gravel adventure weekend. Review prospectus & join us.

All three routes head out through Poland Gate and up through DAR state park, then up and down some sharp climbs past some Scottish longhorns to the famous Cummington Store, with a cow on the roof.

The long route goes up past the Bryant Homestead, and before zigzagging around Plainfield and descending toward Charlemont, where we climb one of the steepest pitches in the area before getting to Pamela’s favorite road, Middle Road which climbs up into Hawley State Forest. Middle is a million dollar road, rebuilt after Irene. The route then heads back along a lovely treelined ridge, and before taking in a road that is notoriously muddy in the spring, but will be bone dry in August. A few more ups and downs brings us to Pine Hill Road, past the estate of Archibald MacLeish—I should say former estate of MacLeish. Someone with too much money bought it and is making a monstrosity out of it. Then there is the bobsled run descent of hell to be ridden with due respect or risk ambulance ride home. All three routes are golden.

  • Cell coverage is spotty and services are slim. Roads have very little traffic, so hitching a lift could take a while. Riders should be self-supported with both bike and personal needs.
  • Carry what you need to fix your bike (be prepared in case you have multiple flats).
  • Have a means of carrying some food and plenty of water. (There are very few stores—they will be listed for various routes).
  • Be prepared for summer thunderstorms and drops in temperature (bring a jacket).
  • Bring your sense of humor and ability to adapt to change in plans… roll.
  • Be comfortable riding on varied conditions of dirt and gravel roads. Most roads will be firm and packed in mid summer, but in some places could be dry and sandy to wet & muddy.
  • Be prepared for long steep climbs and descents. (low gears and good brakes are essential).
  • Be comfortable riding in a group. Long climbs and descents on dirt will inevitably spread the group out at times. Regrouping from time-to-time is expected as some riders cluster together.
  • Routes are not really conducive to pace-lining, but social riding with photo stops is encouraged.

*** Bring proper navigation tools: GPS device, phone app, or cue sheet. Do not rely on others to help you with navigation. They may ride at a different speed than you. ***

CRW Gravel program will provide dinner to all participants. Bring your favorite beverage & folding lawn chair.

There aren't a lot of stores on the route. There is an awesome spring about half way on the long ride, and then two stores in the later third. The long route is 64 miles, with 8,400 feet of climbing. There are 6 significant climbs, and a whole lot of moderate ones. We go up Cooper Lane, down Colrain Mountain, up Franklin Hill, down Stowe Mountain, up Stark Mountain, down Branch Road past the Bell Spring, up Pennel Hill, down Ed Clark, up Hillman, down Wilson Hill, up Patten and then back to Conway. All of the climbs are dirt. Many of the descents are paved.

Bedford Depot Park

120 South Rd
Bedford , MA
Directions:

Bedford DepotFrom the west, turn right from Route 4-225 onto South Road; from the east, turn left from Route 4-225 onto Loomis Street. Bedford Depot Park is at the end of the Minuteman Bikeway.

CRW (Past) President Larry Kernan and Mary Kernan are thrilled to invite you to join them for one of their favorite cycling routes followed by a lunchtime BBQ at their home.

This long ride (39 miles)) starts in Bedford with a climb up Page Road. We’ll wind through Lexington and into Lincoln with an even better climb up Bedford Road. The ride hits some of the prettiest back roads through Wayland and Sudbury with plenty of shade and new pavement.  The route includes two of Larry's favorite roads -- Pelham Island Road and Water Row. You can take a break at Verrill Farm at mile 28, but you’ll want to save your appetite.

The short ride (31 miles) mercifully eliminates the early climb up Page Road and skips a swing around Pelham Island Road but still hits many of the best parts of the ride.

There is a restroom available at the ride start, behind the Bedford Depot. Parking for the ride is either at the Bedford Depot or across the street, behind Bikeway Source (a great local bike shop!). The ride will start behind Bikeway Source.

We'll have several led groups. Check this page often as we recruit leaders and post the speeds for the groups.

- The 31 mile ride will have a no drop ride with a leader and sweep, average of 12 - 13 mph.

Join the BBQ after the ride

After the ride, we'll be moving to the home of Larry and Mary, about 2 miles away. You can either load your bike and drive over or feel free to ride. The BBQ will include hamburgers (with a veggie option) and all the fixings as well as dessert and some great beverages. We ask that those attending the BBQ be CRW members and fully vaccinated. Not yet a CRW member? Come on! It's $15 and you'll consume that in beer and burgers. Click here to join today! Registration for the BBQ is required; please click here.

We hope you can join us!

Curious to see who is taking home the glorious CRW-Devo Climbing Challenge polka dots socks at this month's raffle? Join us next Thursday @ 8:30PM on a social Zoom call.

BYOB, seat back and relax while the host randomize qualified participants names to painstakingly slow raffle the socks. Take a sip and talk bikes with likeminded CRWheelers for the next 30 minutes or so. This is also a great opportunity to discuss weekend ride plans, how to quickly accumulate elevation against the Everesting goal, and chat about the latest and greatest gear you got.

Meriam's Corner Parking Lot

Lexington Road
Meriam's Corner Concord , MA
Directions:

From Route 95 Take exit 46B (Old Exit 30B) for Route 2A West. Pass flashing yellow light at Hanscom Drive and continue to second flashing light at fork; stay right onto Lexington Road AKA Battlefield Road. There will be a  sign for parking for Meriam's Corner.

With the lifting of Covid 19 restrictions in the state, drafting and pace line riding is back on the calendar! Further, the Thursday night fitness rides continue to evolve with changing circumstances and new opportunities. In particular, CRW has launched a new ride concept called "Devo" for Development for all riders who want to improve their performance and enjoyment of cycling.  The long route is 28.7 miles for rolling hills through Concord, Acton, Chelmsford and Carlisle. The 26 mile route makes a slight detour into Kate's Corner and picks up the long route arrows on Proctor Road.  Groups are divided into 8-10 riders by average pace which ranges from 14 to 22+ mph. A No Drop Pace Line is available if 3-4 riders are interested - we start at around 14 - 15 mph and pick up the pace depending on the experience of the participants. There is an optional 18 and 24 mile route for casual riding and limited daylight.  Cancellation due to poor weather is posted before 4:30 PM.

This ride is mostly on gravel roads & rail trail. Some of it maybe rough, sandy, & rocky. According to Strava, the route is 55% dirt, 29% not specified, & 15% paved. Tires 32–35mm should be sufficient. Note we have another group doing a longer 65 mile route, and others on a parallel loop using mainly paved roads, both from a different start location.  Ideally, we can coordinate meeting time in Keene then picnic stop after ride by Lake Dennison.  There is an optional group dinner on our way back at Wachusett Brewing Co., if you are so inclined.
