Minuteman Bikeway Trailhead (Arlington/Cambridge)

Alewife Station Access Rd and Steel Place
Cambridge , MA
Directions:

To reach the Cambridge Minuteman trailhead by subway, take the MBTA Red Line to the Alewife Station. Bicycles are allowed on weekends and during off-peak hours on weekdays; see mbta.com for details.

To reach the Cambridge Minuteman trailhead by car from I-95, take Exit 29A to MA 2 toward Boston. Go 5.9 miles and take the Alewife Station exit. The Alewife Station Access Road becomes Steel Place. Go 0.4 mile and turn left into the parking garage (fee charged).

The Minuteman Bikeway starts on the north side of the Alewife building, at the intersection of Steel Pl and Alewife Station Access Rd. This is the intersection of three bike paths: Fitchburg Cutoff, Alewife Linear, and Minuteman.

Ride image:

A great way to meet other women CRW members!

This is a low-traffic, scenic ride through Lexington, Burlington, Woburn, Winchester, and Arlington! The ride leaves from the Minuteman Bikeway terminus near Alewife (at the intersection of three bike paths: Fitchburg Cutoff, Alewife Linear, and Minuteman). We head down the Minuteman bikeway to Lexington Center, then to Burlington and up Blanchard Rd to the water tower at Mary Cummings Park. We descend to beautiful Horn Pond, spin past Mystic Lakes, and take our "secret" route back to Alewife (that cuts out the traffic in Arlington Center). Expect a pace of about 13-15 mph, with stops to regroup as needed (faster riders can form groups to make their own time).
Rain cancels. Will make call by 10 pm the night before. Will check again at 6 am in case of unexpected weather.

Join us for a fun and social gravel/mixed terrain ride as I sub for Amy this week! This ride is mostly on wide gravel roads & rail trail. Some of it may be rough, sandy, & muddy. According to Strava, the route is 60% unpaved. Tires 32–35mm should be sufficient. If you are familiar with the route you can show-and-go at your own pace; if you are new, we will have a no-drop group.

A journey through Revolutionary War history. Start at Revolution Hall and ride via Meagherville trail and residential streets to the eastern entrance to Minuteman National Historic Park. Follow the Battle Road past several historic buildings, soldier graves, Paul Revere capture site, all the way to the other side of the park at Meriam's Corner. Continue over trails through Concord farmland and open space.

Loop back on historic rail beds that connected Lexington-Bedford-Concord: Reformatory Branch & Minute Man Bikeway. Finish at Revolution Hall, probably in the dark, and treat yourself to a beer!

*** Bring proper navigation tools: GPS device, phone app, or cue sheet. Do not rely on others to help you with navigation. They may ride at a different speed than you. ***

A lovely ride that hasn't been posted for awhile. From Acton, through Groton and Ayer to the Story Book Cottage in Shirley and (hopefully) field of poppies, and beyond. Both short and long rides go past the cottage. History [excerpted] from Shirley town website:  Storybook Cottage is the creation of Dave Holden. Dave purchased the property quite a few years back from his relatives and began the renovation. Dave befriended Tom Fleming, an exceptional artist, and commissioned him to create the storybook figures and signs on the building. Dave and Tom are no longer with us but what they left behind still brings lots of joy to many. Storybook is private property .

Notes:

Due to the forecast for high temps in 90's, the start times have been moved up to 8 and 9:00 AM. In addition, a shorter 31 mile route has been posted that does not go to the Storybook Cottage, but otherwise uses the same pretty roads and hops on the Nashua River RT and Bruce Freeman RT to provide a more casual option for riding on a warm day.

Bedford Depot Park

120 South Rd
Bedford , MA
Directions:

Bedford DepotFrom the west, turn right from Route 4-225 onto South Road; from the east, turn left from Route 4-225 onto Loomis Street. Bedford Depot Park is at the end of the Minuteman Bikeway.

CRW (Past) President Larry Kernan and Mary Kernan are thrilled to invite you to join them for one of their favorite cycling routes followed by a lunchtime BBQ at their home.

This long ride (39 miles)) starts in Bedford with a climb up Page Road. We’ll wind through Lexington and into Lincoln with an even better climb up Bedford Road. The ride hits some of the prettiest back roads through Wayland and Sudbury with plenty of shade and new pavement.  The route includes two of Larry's favorite roads -- Pelham Island Road and Water Row. You can take a break at Verrill Farm at mile 28, but you’ll want to save your appetite.

The short ride (31 miles) mercifully eliminates the early climb up Page Road and skips a swing around Pelham Island Road but still hits many of the best parts of the ride.

There is a restroom available at the ride start, behind the Bedford Depot. Parking for the ride is either at the Bedford Depot or across the street, behind Bikeway Source (a great local bike shop!). The ride will start behind Bikeway Source.

We'll have several led groups. Check this page often as we recruit leaders and post the speeds for the groups.

- The 31 mile ride will have a no drop ride with a leader and sweep, average of 12 - 13 mph.

Join the BBQ after the ride

After the ride, we'll be moving to the home of Larry and Mary, about 2 miles away. You can either load your bike and drive over or feel free to ride. The BBQ will include hamburgers (with a veggie option) and all the fixings as well as dessert and some great beverages. We ask that those attending the BBQ be CRW members and fully vaccinated. Not yet a CRW member? Come on! It's $15 and you'll consume that in beer and burgers. Click here to join today!

Registration for the BBQ is required; please click here.

We hope you can join us!

Alewife Station

135 Alewife Brook Parkway
Cambridge , MA
Directions:

Alewife Station is reachable by car on Route 2, and there is ample paid parking; by car or bicycle on Alewife Brook Parkway; on paths from the west (Fitchburg Cutoff path), north (Minuteman Commuter Bikeway) and east (Linear Park). And Alewife Station is the terminus of the Red Line light rail, which takes bicycles except during peak hours in the peak direction. Ride groups meet in front of the parking garage on Steel Place.

Ride image:

New route, trails, coastal views, bakeries, & a challenge: bicycle 253km in 13 hours or overall average of 20km/h, leaving small contingency. This edition is designed for the closest weekend to summer solstice.

We ran the trip three times before, all with different ideas & routes. Full report available at https://mcccxxv.wordpress.com/2018/06/30/beat-the-ferry

The route starts from Alewife T station on quite small roads out to Plymouth until we cross Cape Cod canal to Sandwich. Soon after we join Cape Cod Canal trail. We stop for good burrito lunch at Orleans Corner Store. Visit a few lighthouses before reaching the trail's northern terminus for bakery & coffee stop. Ride through the hills of Wellfleet & Truro before a sprint to the finish just in time for quick bite, beer, & ferry. We may even have time for a quick ocean dip.

We meet in front of Alewife T station, by the taxi stand promptly at 6:00. Arrive much earlier to park & get ready. Others can join along the way as we broadcast Live Tracking of our location on Slack.

We take the Bay State Cruises ferry at 19:30 arriving in Boston at 21:00. You must book your ferry & bicycle ticket in advance of starting on the ride.

Many options for bakeries & convenience stores along the way. These will be very quick stops, mostly for liquid & snacks: orange juice, protein shake, V8, chocolate milk, & energy bars.

Bail out options include:

  • Taxi, Uber, & Lyft
  • Hotels & motels
  • Start the ride earlier or take the later ferry at 20:00

Bring small handlebar bag to carry extra layers, gear, snacks, USB battery, lights, & hydration tablets.

This will be self-guided tour, even though we will try to stay together as a group. Bring GPS device, phone with navigation apps, or cue sheets for the routes you plan to ride. We will not provide them.
