📝 Overview

Wanna work on your hills game?  Training for an upcoming hill climb?  Do you enjoy pain?  Then, you are in luck!

A ride is considered to have a substantial amount of climbing if there is 100ft elevation gain per mile.  This route has 120ft per mile, so saddle up!

Come join us for an enjoyable workout starting from Porter Square in Cambridge or Monument Park in Arlington, where we will do hill repeats in Arlington Heights.

🕝 Timing and Options

There is no obligation to join for all the hills.  A convenient spot to drop from the ride to get home for work or other obligations may be the final ascent to the water tower in Arlington Heights prior to heading over to the other side of Mass Ave.  Most likely we will hit the water tower between 7am and 730am, depending on pace.  Plan for the the bonus section east of Mass Ave to take approximately 30 minutes longer to complete.

🚲 Ride Format

⛰️🛑 Regrouping

This is a NO DROP ride, we will wait at the top of most hills to regroup when safe to do so.  Everyone can climb and descend at whatever pace they feel comfortable with.

🚴🏼‍♂️🚴🏿🚴🏽‍♀️ Pace Groups

If the group is large enough, we will split it into 2 different paces, such that people aren't waiting too long at regrouping points.

🗺️ Route Notes

🧭 Navigation

Since this route has a few overlapping sections, the GPS may be thrown off a bit and get confused in some sections.  Be sure to review the cues prior to the ride to familiarize yourself with the route.

 Hazards & Road Conditions

Rough Roads: Traversing Hawthorne Ave (regrouping point and slow speed so okay), going up on Brattle Street (going slow so okay)

Speed Bump: Between Wheeler Lane & Ridge Street connection

⚠️ Disclaimer

↗ ↘ Steep Ascents and Descents

There are some steep ascents on this route (up to 20%).  Make sure to bring a bike with proper gearing.

What goes up, must also come down; meaning there are also steep descents.  Make sure your brakes in good working order.

📍 Meeting Point(s)

1️⃣ We will meet at the bike racks closest to the main intersection at Porter Square on the island between Dunkin and CVS.  There is also a convenient bike repair stand there if needed.

2️⃣ If you would like to join us in Arlington, we will probably be rolling by Monument Park in Arlington center about 10 minutes after the ride starts.

Ride Description

CRW "Devo" for Development for all riders who want to improve their performance, skills and enjoyment of cycling. This is a chance to learn and work on climbing on the gorgeous roads of Dover. Groups are divided into 4-8 riders by average pace which ranges from 13 to 22+ mph.

Short stretch to get the legs warm before the first climb up Union and then a descent through South Natick and onto Pleasant. Left at the top to descend onto Claybrook and a chance to get some real warmth in the legs with rolling hills. A couple of turns brings us onto Dedham and towards our first repeat chance on Strawberry Hill 3x or 5x - Your choice!. Then we take the Wilsondale rollercoaster, but turn right before the end to climb up to the Skyline loop. Right again onto Summer and a steady climb before turning into some rollers. Watch for the speedbumps here, you can pass them on the right and the blacktop is smooth! Right onto Dover for a short stretch, before a quick surprise climb up High Rock and Cedar. This loops us back to Dover and its rolling hills, before feeding into Powisett. A right turn onto Walpole and through Dover Center, here comes the moneymaker! A careful cross of Main and we are onto Pegan Hill, do you have a three-peat in you? Take your breath and we descend again before heading left onto Main Street and some gentle hills. We are back in South Natick and we hook left onto Eliot for a short stretch. Thought you were done? Nope! Farm Hill Road awaits, the last of our leg busters! Empty your tank and enjoy the last descent down into Natick and the all important Ice Cream stop! Enjoy! You earned it!.

Ride image:

New route, trails, coastal views, bakeries, & a challenge: bicycle 253km in 13 hours or overall average of 20km/h, leaving small contingency. This edition is designed for the closest weekend to summer solstice.

We ran the trip three times before, all with different ideas & routes. Full report available at https://mcccxxv.wordpress.com/2018/06/30/beat-the-ferry

The route starts from Alewife T station on quite small roads out to Plymouth until we cross Cape Cod canal to Sandwich. Soon after we join Cape Cod Canal trail. We stop for good burrito lunch at Orleans Corner Store. Visit a few lighthouses before reaching the trail's northern terminus for bakery & coffee stop. Ride through the hills of Wellfleet & Truro before a sprint to the finish just in time for quick bite, beer, & ferry. We may even have time for a quick ocean dip.

We meet in front of Alewife T station, by the taxi stand promptly at 6:00. Arrive much earlier to park & get ready. Others can join along the way as we broadcast Live Tracking of our location on Slack.

We take the Bay State Cruises ferry at 19:30 arriving in Boston at 21:00. You must book your ferry & bicycle ticket in advance of starting on the ride.

Many options for bakeries & convenience stores along the way. These will be very quick stops, mostly for liquid & snacks: orange juice, protein shake, V8, chocolate milk, & energy bars.

Bail out options include:

  • Taxi, Uber, & Lyft
  • Hotels & motels
  • Start the ride earlier or take the later ferry at 20:00

Bring small handlebar bag to carry extra layers, gear, snacks, USB battery, lights, & hydration tablets.

This will be self-guided tour, even though we will try to stay together as a group. Bring GPS device, phone with navigation apps, or cue sheets for the routes you plan to ride. We will not provide them.
