The Norwellian Ride is flat to rolling, with some short but steep sections to keep us honest.  The ride includes the modest cottages on Jerusalem Road, 2 lighthouses, windmills, several harbors, and countless other photo ops.

I haven't figured out how to avoid the uphills on the way back, yet!

Join me on this delightful ride, you'll be glad you did.

We typically stop at Scituate Harbor at the Coffee Corner (no restrooms).

Rain may cancel the ride.  If the weather is iffy, check this page Saturday after 7AM or on Facebook, South Shore Mellow Riders Club page.

    Ride Description:

Kick off the gravel season with CRW! Join us for a fun and social gravel/mixed terrain ride for the "gravel curious" and seasoned gravel riders! Before we ride we'll give a general introduction to gravel riding, with safety and practical tips, while we enjoy coffee and donuts, courtesy of CRW's Gravel Program. We will split into approximate pace groups and roll out at 9 AM. We will have brief stops for regrouping, photo ops, and to discuss techniques and tips.

This ride is mostly on wide gravel roads, rail trail and boardwalks. Some of it may be rough, sandy, & muddy. The route is 65% unpaved. If you are familiar with the route you can show-and-go at your own pace; if you are new, we will have a no-drop group.

Rain cancels. Ride leader will make the call by 10 pm on the day before the ride.

    Notes for new-to-gravel riders:

PLEASE BE FAMILIAR WITH THE INFORMATION HERE Bring water/food for at least 2 hours on the bike (including brief stops). Expect your pace to be 2-4 mph slower than your road pace. Tires 32–35 mm should be sufficient; slick tires are NOT recommended.  Unless you have exceptional bike handling skills, a road bike is NOT appropriate for this ride. Depending on your endurance level and bike fit, a mountain bike MAY be appropriate.

*** Bring proper navigation tools: GPS device or phone app. ***

    Ride Description:

This challenging route deserves a special place in our hearts. Running all year around, TMS takes you from the Brewery parking lot in Waltham all the way to the Harvard General Store and back. Come meet regulars and newcomers to CRW-Devo rides every third Sunday of the month. In the colder months of the year (namely December, January, February and March) we roll at 8:30 AM and all other months at 7:30 AM.

You will see nice rural settings, ride through countless suburban towns and face challenging hills.

    Equipment requirements:

Bike, helmet, backlights and good humor to deal with what will be thrown at you.

    Coffee Shop selection:

You will be taken to the most revered cycling destination of the western suburbs - The holy grail of suburban coffee shops, the one and only  - Harvard General Store.

We all know how coffee shop stops halfway through rides tend to go long... so if you are on a rush, feel free to skip coffee (it's a sacrilege but you will be forgiven). We'll try to keep the stop under 30 minutes, anyway.

The pace will be defined by who shows up and how fit the group is. Although we will not be attacking the group, expect a good paceline to shape up. If you are feeling it, give your contribution to the pull. If not, hang at the back and enjoy the ride.

In this ride we expect several groups at different paces to form. There should be ride leaders with each group. If you feel like you didn't make the best choice, there will be a rest stop around mile 17 where you can switch groups or you may eventually be caught by the following group if you are dropped.

    Ride Start Location:

There's a large parking lot at the start of the ride (in front of the Mighty Squirrel Brewery). They have a coffee shop there with toilets, but aren't open before 7.

Get ready for the Spring season by honing in your skills at our first 2024 climbing workshop, led by instructors Harold Hatch, Doug Cornelius, and Brian Wyka!

    • In this workshop, you’ll learn…
      • About bike gearing, cadence, posture, shifting
      • How to read a route and pace different climbs

You’ll practice these skills on a popular local hill and receive individualized feedback.

We hope you’ll ride away with new strategies for how to implement these techniques and practice your climbing skills going forward.

This workshop is geared towards intermediate riders. Ideally, you…
    • Are a CRW member (no guests, sorry)
    • Can climb for several minutes (potentially up to 8 min on this hill)
    • Ride regularly (~ 2-3/week) and/or have solid baseline fitness and basic bike handling skills
    • Are looking to build your climbing confidence

The selected climb is closed to car traffic and presents challenges compatible with the target audience skills. It is challenging enough for participants to benefit from the instruction received. Please see the a link to the segment here.

In order to ensure everyone has time to safely practice, we’re capping attendance at 16 riders, but will offer a waitlist for ad hoc additions.

Location: Prospect Hill Park (Google Maps link), meet in the parking lot at the sign

We’ll start promptly at 12PM, so please arrive 15 min ahead of time.

    The instructors expectations are:

    • You fit the ride level described above
    • Your equipment is in working order
    • You will abide by the club's riding guidelines (wearing helmet, etc...)
    • You will behave accordingly

    Ride Description:

A group that enjoys exploring a variety of scenic routes, mostly in the western suburbs, but also to the north or south. Occasionally we do an urban exploration. We always include a lunch stop, either during or at the end of the ride. In the winter we may substitute other activities, such as cross-country skiing. We stay together, following the leader for the day, while being careful not to drop anyone. On a rural ride of average hilliness, the pace is 15 to 17 mph on the flats, but slows considerably on the hills, so we wind up with a rolling average of about 13 mph. In fairness to the group, we require that prospective riders be capable of maintaining this pace. Distances are typically between 30 and 40 miles.

Non-members of CRW are welcome to ride with us and experience what the Wednesday Wheelers offer. If you like our rides, however, and wish to continue to ride with us, we expect you to become a CRW member.

Get ready for the Spring season by honing in your skills at our second 2024 climbing workshop, led by instructors Harold Hatch, Doug Cornelius, and Brian Wyka!

We’ll start promptly at 8:30AM, so please arrive 15 min ahead of time.

    The instructors expectations are:

    • You fit the ride level described above
    • Your equipment is in working order
    • You will abide by the club's riding guidelines (wearing helmet, etc...)
    • You will behave accordingly
    • 2024-05-05

    • 7:30 sharp, Memorial Day weekend - Labor day weekend
    • 8:30 Sharp, after Labor Day

We typically stop at Scituate Harbor for coffee at Coffee Corner or Dunkin, and for restrooms.  The long ride also stops at the Windmill in Hull gut.

    Ride Description:

The Northeast Bicycle Club is happy to provide instruction on paceline riding for CRW members.  This is a CRW members only event. Those who have always wanted to ride a paceline will be shown how to do this safely and effectively within small groups of about 5 each.  Speed is NOT the objective for this instruction session, rather we want to get people feeling comfortable riding more closely together, get everyone to ride safely and predictably, and how to exchange the lead rider for each paceline.

    Why Cyclists Ride in Pacelines

The reason is, as any cyclist knows, riding into a headwind is harder than riding in no wind.  Riding in a draft (e.g., behind a truck or school bus or another rider) makes riding easy.  So, if five riders wanted to ride faster and more efficiently, they should share the load of breaking the wind for the group.  Each rider should take turns riding at the front doing most of the work, then drop back and spend the rest of the time in the draft taking it easy.  Once you experience this, you'll have an "Aha!" moment.  (By the way, we're not advocating drafting trucks or school busses.)

    Session Description

It is assumed that participants have little or no previous experience riding in a paceline.  We will break into small groups and assign an NEBC instructor for each group.  In the parking lot, we will start with a lecture on the responsibility of the lead rider, expectations for rider predictably, the importance of group communication, and how the group should behave on trafficked roads.  We will demonstrate how (and when) the lead rider exchange is to be performed.  Then each group will ride to a mile-long stretch of road nearby to practice this technique, including the exchange of lead riders.  The instructor will accompany the group, providing tips, critiques, etc.  At each end of the road we'll stop to turn around and discuss how to improve the group's performance.

Note that the road session will not be fast, so you may not feel the full advantage of pacelining.  But with practice, as you and your fellow riders gain more experience and speed, you'll have your "Aha!" moment.

The Pneumatic Classic celebrates the 1889 debut of pneumatic tires in bike racing.

On May 18th, 1889 the captain of the Belfast Cruisers Cycling Club was the first person to compete in a bike race on newfangled "sausage tyres" invented in 1887 by Scotland's John Boyd Dunlap (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Boyd_Dunlop).

Wille Hume (https://thepedalclub.org/PDF/The_Golden_book_0001_William-Hume.pdf) won "all four cycling events in sensational fashion from riders of repute" at the Queen's College Sports held on the North of Ireland Cricket Club Grounds.

The Pneumatic Classic features 2 late morning rides (25m & 40m) departing from the Dirigible Brewery in Littleton, MA.

After finishing the rides we'll toast Willie and John's accomplishments - and marvel at today's tubeless tires - with Dirigible's craft brews and food.

    Ride Description:

June is long ride month. By this time of the year you should have several centuries under your belt and is looking to extend that. Wellcome! This 150 mile loop was planned, well... around decent coffee shops. Life is too short to ride the same roads and drink poor coffee...

After an amazing turnup and ride in 2023, CRW-Devo is getting this ride on the calendar again, hoping to get an even larger group together.

You will see nice rural settings, ride through countless suburban towns, and face honest hills. For the same low price you will also be presented to some of the finest gravel on the Southern New England Turnpike Trail. We will even ride by Wachusett in case you are missing it.

    Equipment requirements:

Bike, helmet, backlights and good humor to deal with what will be thrown at you.

    Coffee Shop selection:

Lots of local breakfast spots and trendy craft coffee-shops to try along the route!

Stop #1: Bettys in Blackstone, MA (was kinda busy last time so likely to change)

Stop #2: Cracked - Your Roadside Eatery - in Rutland, MA

Stop #3: Salt & Light - Groton, MA

    Ride Start Location:

I haven't figured out how to about the uphill on the way back, yet!

    Ride time is

    • 8:30 sharp, until memorial day weekend
    • 7:30 sharp, Memorial Day weekend - Labor day weekend
    • 8:30 Sharp, after Labor Day

Both the long and short rides start at 7:30 SHARP to avoid traffic.  Set your alarm clock for early Sunday morning.  you'll be glad you did.

We typically stop at Scituate Harbor for coffee at Coffee Corner or Dunkin, and for restrooms.  The long ride also stops at the Windmill in Hull gut.

Rain may cancel the ride, or show and go.  if the  weather is iffy, check this page Sunday after 6 AM.

    Ride Start Location:

We start at the Park and Ride across from Home Depot.  There are no bathrooms in the Park and Ride, but there are two Dunkin Donuts and a Wendy's with 1 mile of the ride in Rt.  228.

Get ready for the Spring season by honing in your skills at our second 2024 pacelining workshop, led by CRW-Devo instructors!

    • In this workshop, you’ll learn…
      • How to safely ride in a single paceline
      • How to communicate while in a paceline
      • How to behave while riding in a paceline
      • About other types of pacelines
      • How to ride efficiently in a paceline

You’ll practice these skills on a controlled environment (parking lot) and receive individualized feedback.

We hope you’ll ride away with new strategies for how to implement these techniques and practice your pacelining skills going forward.

This workshop is geared towards advanced beginner, and intermediate riders. Ideally, you…
    • Are a CRW member (no guests, sorry)
    • Ride regularly (~ 2-3/week) and/or have solid baseline fitness and basic bike handling skills
    • Feel comfortable using signals while riding (sometimes riding with just one hand in the handlebar)
    • Want to enjoy drafting behind your ride partners

The selected training ground has reduced car traffic and presents a good environment to learn the basics of pacelining, even if at lower speeds. Instructors may be able to take the participants out for a short test ride to put the learnings into practice.

In order to ensure everyone has time to safely practice, we’re capping attendance at 16 riders, but will offer a waitlist for ad hoc additions.

Location: MBTA Lincoln Station Parking Lot  (Google Maps link), meet in the parking lot at the sign

    • 2024-06-09

    Ride Description:

Start from MBTA train station in Braintree, MA and ride south through mostly quiet roads to Cape Cod. Once over the Bourne Bridge (must walk across on western sidewalk) enjoy great scenery along the coast and down the Shining Sea Bike Path. Have lunch in Woods Hole before heading to Hyannis and maybe stopping for some beach time in between, and then on to Hyannis to catch the Cape Flyer (seasonal) back to Braintree.

There are no alternate / shorter options for this ride.

Riders go at their own pace. The distance to the Bourne Bridge is approx. 48 miles. A great place to stop for lunch is at Pie-In-the-Sky in Woods Hole, MA (70 mi). If you have time and are inclined, spend some time at Craigville Beach near the end in Hyannis, MA (100 mi). If you want to take a dip in the water, bring a lock for your bike and trunks for yourself.

This is a one-way ride and you are responsible for getting to the Hyannis Transportation Center on time (by 6 pm) to make the 6:10 pm train back to Braintree. Tickets are $22 (there may be a group discount if we have more than 10 people registered) and bikes are free. Train arrives in Braintree at 8:10 pm. Food and drink (including beer and wine) are available on the train for purchase.

Rain date is the following day (Sunday). If the weather is iffy, check this page after midnight Friday 21 June and after midnight Saturday 22 June, if necessary, on Social Media Sites.

    Ride Start Location:

We start at the rooftop level of the MBTA parking garage in Braintree. Ride leaders will check that riders are registered and give the safety talk. Afterwards we will depart in small groups via the parking garage elevators and once on street level guided briefly by human arrows.

The South Shore Coastal Loop is a beautiful tide that includes many miles of glorious Scituate, Cohasset, and Hull coastlines.  We'll ride though Rockland, Norwell, and Hingham on our way to and from the coast.    The long ride is 54 miles; the short ride is 41 miles.  Both rides are flat to rolling, with some short but steep sections to keep us honest.   Both rides includes the cottages on Jerusalem Road, 2 lighthouses, 3 Windmills, 4 harbors, and countless other Photo Ops and starts with a 4-mile downhill.   The long ride adds 12 miles of almost dead-flat riding along Nantasket Beach.

The Newton Donut ride-- join us!

Enjoy this delightful ride with a friendly group. The 23 mile route spans Newton and Weston, passing by beautiful historic homes. The 36 miles adds Sudbury and the 52 reaches Stow.

Why is it called a donut ride? Because we have a pre-ride social gathering for anyone who wants to join at the Dunkin Donuts next door to the ride start, with a free coffee and donut on CRW's tab.

The ride is show-and-go, which means everyone goes at their own pace. Be sure to download the GPS or print a cue sheet ahead (no printed copies at the ride start). Please don't rely on being able to follow someone else as there's no set pace.

*If this ride is canceled for weather issues it will be listed as canceled the night  before so check here in the a.m. before you head out.

We look forward to seeing you on the ride!

    Ride Start Location:

    1. The ride start and parking is behind the dark red/brown condo building at 1172 Beacon St., Newton. The parking is free but please park in the back only (not the side).

    2. The pre-ride social is right next door at the Dunkin Donuts at 1148 Beacon St., Newton (it has bathrooms). It is a 1 minute walk from the ride start.

    Timing:

         a.  The pre-ride social is from 845am to 915am at Dunkin Donuts For the free coffee and donut (or anything else, up to $5 per person), ask Lisa for the credit card. Anytime up to 'last call' at 910a).

         b. The ride: pre-ride overview is at 9:20am, and the ride will begin promptly at 9:30am

This is Narragansett Bay Wheelmen Ride no. 52.  NBW has graciously given us permission to use this route in the past.

According to NBW's notes, "Designed by Bill and Sandy McIlmail, it is a very flat ride through the cranberry growing region of southeastern Mass . . . Mattapoisett is a picturesque town with a lovely waterfront.  Rochester is a stately New England town with its church and green. Carver is the home of the popular King Richard's Medieval Faire . . ."  This is probably going to be your fastest 50-mile ride of the season.  There is also a shorter 30-mile option.  Thank you, NBW, for arrowing the ride!

Find a few friends and break your records.

Food stops:  Country store in Rochester; Dunkin Donuts on Rt. 28, General Store and deli in South Carver.

Ride start: Commuter parking lot, right off Rt. I-195 (Exit 31A), Mattapoisett, across the street from Uncle Jon's Coffee

    Ride Description:

The Newton-Dover Donut ride-- join us!

Note: this is a different route than the Newton-Weston donut ride, to change it up a bit.

Enjoy this delightful ride with a friendly group. We span Newton, Wellesley, Needham and Dover. There's a regular (25 miles), medium (33 miles) and long (47 miles).

*If this ride is canceled for weather issues it will be listed here as canceled by the night before so check here in the a.m. before you head out.

I'm planning a bikepacking ride from our house in Bonnet Shores, Narragansett, RI to Mystic (about 40 miles), with dinner and an overnight stay in Mystic.  Then a ride back the next day.  This is a placeholder until the details are ironed out.  The number of registrants will likely be capped at 12.  Pace will be moderate to easy (12 mph average), for people who want to try out bikepacking or who would like to have an easy two-day ride.

    Ride Description:

Improved third iteration of this scenic ride in and around Shirley, MA, once voted America’s Most Historic Small Town by ePodunk.com (really!), and now timed to catch some fall foliage. Both distances include a few roads rarely visited by CRW. New short ride includes nice sections in Groton, Townsend, Lunenburg, Shirley, and return through Devens. Long ride adds Lancaster and new routing through Bolton with return through Harvard. Short ride has 1,500 ft. of climbing. Long ride has 3,000 ft. of climbing.

    Ride Start Location:

Nashua River Rail Trail, Ayer Commuter Parking Garage, 3 Groton St., Ayer. Please park and meet at the far end of the garage. Because the start location is a parking garage with limited height, if you have bikes on a roof rack, park in the small commuter lot (12 Park St., Ayer) on the left side of the road before you get to the Dunkin Donuts, then ride the last 1/10th mile to the parking garage on Groton St.  No restrooms at the start, but several gas stations and the Dunkin Donuts are nearby.

The Women's/Nonbinary Program's goal is to invite more women, nonbinary, and female-identifying folks onto the road, foster connection with other women in the club, and act as an on-ramp to other co-ed areas of the club. Feel free to contact the ride leader via email if you have any questions about this ride or the Women's/Nonbinary Program in general.
