Everyone should bicycle on Martha's Vineyard at least once a year. No other place offers such rich combination of small roads, trails, beaches, ginger bread houses, Jaws bridge, Back Door donuts, & no fewer than four lighthouses.

Forecast is for warm 21ºC/69ºF inviting for an ocean plunge in South Beach.

I have often visited the island for multiple days to savor it. This will be my first day trip in a tour de force to visit all landmarks in one go.

My plan is to board the ferry from Woods Hole at 10:45 to Vineyard Haven at 11:30. That leaves me just about five hours until the return ferry at 17:00 due to schedule constraint on both ends. Pace is brisk 25+kph/16+mph.

There is no reason any of you should rush this exceptional tour. I have two suggestions:

1. Extend your time on the island, taking an earlier ferry, later ferry, or both.

2. Take a shorter route: at 18.5km/11.5mi continue on State Road to West Tisbury for lunch at 7a Foods (order in advance), then continue the loop from there. You will miss Gay Head lighthouse & rolling hills of Aquinnah. You will still visit all other major landmarks. That will save about 45km/30mi from the total distance. The route is very flat afterwards.

*** No leader. Not a CRW club organized ride. Not covered by club insurance. Groups assemble & ride as they see fit. ***
