Postponed by weather from Native American Heritage Day, November 26, 2021.
The day after Thanksgiving is Native American Heritage Day. We will ride to South Natick in honor of the Massachusett-Nipmuc tribe.
Since ancient times they followed the seasons and roamed central and eastern Massachusetts in search of fish, clams, fowl, game, and wild plants and berries. They were decimated by disease as a result of European contact and were forced circa 1650 by the colonists to scatter or assimilate and take up a sedentary life in "Praying Towns" like South Natick from which they were gradually dispossessed.
Our ride will visit their burial place next to the Bacon Free Library in South Natick at mile 35.6. We will have coffee across the street at the Charles River Coffee House, which is built on the site of the old Bailey Hotel, a favorite meetup spot for recreational and racing cyclists in the 19th century.
Note: There is one mile of good dirt road starting at mile 45.6 that is rideable on a road bike.
This is a ride created by New England Cycling Coalition for Diversity. NECCD has given us permission to use this route.
