This is a social gravel ride through the Fells, which is starting to get nice fall colors. With late day lighting we'll be able to enjoy beautiful scenery.
Trails are wide gravel and fire roads, and generally in good conditions. If you can do the Estabrook climb on the Dirty Battle Road then you'll be ok. If you have never done gravel or other off-road biking, this is probably not a good route to start.
Start: Behind West Medford train station on Playstead road. Go to the end of the commuter parking where the path splits off to the playground (corner of Madison)
Timing: We will leave at 4:30 and should be back by with plenty of light
Route : We head out towards Winthrop st. We'll take side roads to avoid the lower part of Whitmore Brook trail (tends to be rough and muddy) then cross south border and loop around the southern reservoir. We'll stay on the lower trails all the way to the Fallon Rd entrance then follow a short road section back along the Fellsway and into the Sheepfold area. We will go up Brooks to Middle road and finish with another short section south of Border road.
*** Bring proper navigation tools: GPS device, phone app, or cue sheet (note that those don't work well for some wood sections). Do not rely on others to help you with navigation. They may ride at a different speed than you.
*** Bring bug spray: Recommended, but not essential. It's getting cooler and we are on wider trails.
*** Clear / light shade glasses recommended: Late in the day and in the woods sunglasses may restrict visibility
*** Gravel bike: Although the trails are wide you need some traction. Not recommended for slick tires, but not a mountain bike trail either.
Rain cancels. Ride leader will make the call by noon on the day of the ride.
