Plenty of options to take pictures, admire scenery, & smell flowers. On another ride. This is about one goal only: arrive Portland before last train departs at 18:28. You must book train ticket & bicycle pass in advance—space is limited.

Challenge last three years was plenty of fun: enough for adrenaline rush, & comfortable to enjoy ice cream, lighthouses, & cider before arriving the train station on schedule. Refer to full trip report.

This year, the challenge is taking a new scenic coastal route: bicycle 181km in 9 hours, or overall average of 20km/h, leaving some contingency time. There are a few minor smooth gravel sections that can be travelled on 25mm tires.

Follow the East Coast Greenway along the coast with most beautiful views to Portsmouth for snack stop. Continue along the coast for group picture in front Nubble lighthouse before late lunch in Wells. But we are not done yet with lighthouses. After a dip in Kettle Cove, we visit three more: picturesque Portland Head, Sprint Point, & Bug lighthouses. With a few precious minutes to spare, we stop at Salvage BBQ for meal to eat or carry out ahead of boarding the train.

We meet in Boston North station to board 7:30 train to Newburyport 8:35. Eat breakfast on the train. Food & rest stops every 50km or so for very quick snacks, liquid calories, & chocolate.

We return on last Amtrak train at 18:28 arriving in Boston at 21:00. You must purchase your Amtrak train & bicycle tickets in advance of starting on the ride.

Many options for Cumberland Farms stores along the way. These will be very quick stops, mostly for liquid & snacks: orange juice, protein shake, V8, chocolate milk, & energy bars.
