[Preparing to Leave Australia]

Well what would life on this trip be like without our occasional glitch? We were preparing for our scheduled charter flight from Cairns, Australia to Osaka, Japan with Malaysian Airlines. Hours before the scheduled departure time Malaysian Airlines received word from Japan Airlines (JAL) that landing rights were being denied. It seems that JAL controls landing rights throughout Japan, and due to some technicality or other, will not allow the charter 747 to land.

So our flight was postponed for a day in order to work out a solution to this awkward situation. The "solution" turned out to be that Malaysian Airlines will fly us aboard their 747 to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where we will change to a pair of smaller aircraft. One of them will be a Malaysian Airlines flight and will proceed directly to Osaka. Ours will be a Japanese Airline flight and will first make a stop in Singapore (opposite direction) then refuel and fly on to Osaka.

So from several thousand feet above the Malay Peninsula we will sign off on the Australian leg of our tour with...
